'Heat of Fusion' Documentary

Below you'll find Stephen Spaccarelli's excellent documentary Heat of Fusion: A Life in the Art of Casting. The film, which took two years to make, goes behind the scenes to look at the workings of the Hudson Valley's Polich Tallix Fine Art Foundry and the accomplishments of its founder Dick Polich.

Included in the film are interviews with former and current foundry employees, foundry artists (numbering nearly 500, they include Zhang Huan, Martin Puryear, Isamu Noguchi, Tom Otterness, Ursula von Rydingsvard, Kiki Smith, and Frank Stella), and friends of Polich.

Polich was the subject of "Dick Polich: Transforming Metal into Art" at Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art, SUNY/New Paltz, New York; the show ran from August 27, 2014, through December 14, 2014, and included a talk with employees about their foundry experiences. It is worth your time to visit the archived exhibition link. (The exhibition was covered in Sharyn Flanagan's "Dorsky Museum Spotlights Work of Tallix Founder Dick Polich", Almanac Weekly, October 20, 2014.)

The illustrated catalogue (September 2014) accompanying the Dorsky Museum exhibition documents the show and includes a survey of Polich's work with artists since the 1960s. It is still available through SUNY Press (click the link above for purchasing information).
